Zanesville Pottery, Arts & Crafts Oil Jar, Tapered Shoulder Vase, Wisteria Glaze

  

The vase is done in the very desirable deep matte purple or Wisteria glaze, The shape is what we call a tapered shoulder vase. The vase is very large as it stands 11 5/8" tall and is 6 3/8" in diameter at the shoulder. The bottom has a diameter of 3 13/16" and the top opening is 4 1/8" outside and 3 5/16 inside the neck measurement.

The vase displays a large Oil Jar or tapered shoulder form shape. The vase has that deep matte purple glaze that is very popular in the Arts and Crafts decorating scheme. This has also been called a Wisteria Glaze. The glaze covers the entire vessel and is pretty uniform throughout.

The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. There is a stilt pull on the underside bottom and not a shallow chip. It lines up perfectly with the other 2 stilt marks. The vase is unsigned but has that beige sandy bottom and a number "37" impressed into the clay.

This is as good as a signature. This is known as shape number 37 in the Zanesville Pottery Catalog.

It was only made in this size. This is a wonderful form and would look just fine in any early matte art pottery collection. I'm sure it would look just fine on that Stickley bookcase.
