For sale is a splendid arts and crafts style vase made by The Zanesville Stoneware Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The vase is done in the very desirable deep matte green glaze and the shape is what we call a shoulder shaped vase. The vase depicts a large Tobacco leaf on the front side and a smooth back side. The deep matte green glaze is very desirable in the Arts and Crafts decorating scheme. This matte green has a glaze similar to Weller's Bedford Matt and somewhat similar to Hampshire Pottery's cucumber matte green glaze.
The glaze is deep green and thick at the shoulder. It thins out a little towards the bottom edge. There is char coaling throughout. The vase is unsigned but has a number "102" impressed into the underside bottom. This is as good as a signature.
This is known as shape number 102 in the Zanesville Pottery Catalog. This is a wonderful form and would look just fine in any early matte green art pottery collection. I'm sure it would look just fine on that Stickley bookcase. 5.75 wide at shoulder. Condition - Very Good Vintage.
Small chip on base - not visible when on shelf.
