FEATURED: A really colorful and scarce example of 20th Century Southern Folk Art, this COMO-CRAFT JARDINIERE, with room for large plants while adding its own vibrancy and quirky interest to any garden or room in your home as a great piece of Outsider Folk Art! This cement jardiniere is in remarkable condition, with delicious colors of vivid bright blue, dark brick reds, greens and orange- yellows sliding and twirling down the white base, creating that "flame" pattern this pottery is known for. As it is cement, it's heavy enough to be pet-proof, sits calmly & flat on any surface, vividly showing off your happy plants.

We loved the textured, slightly pebbley surface of the cement under the colors, which just adds to the folk art rustic charm, and that it has been used lovingly as a planter and survived for decades with just slight normal wear and use noted. A ninety-ish year old planter all ready for your favorite succulents, orchids, or tropical beauties to come live in it, or just have it out on display as the handsome, wild thing it still is! HAROLD HORINE, owner of and artist for COMO-CRAFT, came up with an idea to make planters and pots out of cement (sand/ concrete) mix rather than clay, which had to be fired, was more expensive to produce, and took longer, too, and then he "glazed" them with oil paints on a turning wheel, making this great swirled & dripped glaze pattern, again which needed no firing in a kiln and could be exposed to weather outside for years ahead. His wares were all very colorful, no two alike, not marked, and a great success with tourists.

His creations were not at all your typical roadside kitschy cement gray figures we still see! We were told his process was patented and these very colorful, unique and striking items were made for several decades, all hand-made and decorated.

Horine also taught his process to TB patients at Sunnyslope, outside of Phoenix, AZ, as an art therapy and income source, only theirs was called Mission Craft Pottery. COMO-CRAFT is commonly known as Ozark Roadside Pottery, the genre for this style. This is a super example, in great antique condition, of American Southern Depression-Era Folk Art at its best, and something that is also so modern, so now, so country garden meets Southern rural charm! Measures: 7.5 inches tall, 7 inches in diameter at top. Made of cement/sand/concrete mix with oil-painted designs, by Harold Horine, Como-Craft Co.

Hollister, MO probably in 1930's. Also known as Ozark Roadside pottery.

This is NOT Niloak/Comanche/Ouachita Clay Pottery. In very good condition, great bright colors and finish from oil paints, with no cracks, rings "true" to a tap, and has a deliberate drainhole in the bottom for plants.

Overall paint crazing from age/weather/use adds to its look and character, we feel. Evidence of old potting soil still inside, so you are free to use it as a planter with no worries; it's been a great planter for years already! A very collectible item and one you and your special plants can enjoy for many decades ahead, adding color and zip to your home with a unique style. Very Boho meets Mid Century with a splash of Tiki and fun mixed in! We pack your valuables with care for safety and security.
