Smoke Raku is a ceramic art technique that uses smoke to create a black crackle finish on unglazed clay. The process involves firing a ceramic object in a kiln, then exposing it to smoke from burning objects creating the crackle patterns you see on this handmade pot. The word'Saio' is written in red on the bottom - I don't know if this means anything. Saio is the title of the unmarried female members of the Japanese Imperial Family or perhaps it is a pottery in Japan. The pot measures 6 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall and is in very good condition with just a few cosmetic defects (see photos).
