This handmade lidded jar was crafted by Ethlyn Haslerud, a studio potter from Durham, New Hampshire. Ethlyn was part of a close-knit artistic circle that included famed potters Edwin and Mary Scheier, whose influence can be seen in the organic forms and flowing surface decoration of her work. Haslerud lived in the Faculty neighborhood of Durham from the 1950s onward and worked primarily with local red Durham clay. More than just a potter, she was a renaissance woman: a PhD in Psychology, a community mental health pioneer, a gardener, a woodworker, and the mother of three daughters. Her pottery was created during the 1950s-1970s, and each piece carries the quiet strength of a life deeply rooted in both art and care.
This piece reflects that legacy - rich, earthy, and grounded in utility. Material: Hand-thrown stoneware with local red Durham clay. Color: Glossy brown glaze with carved slip decoration.
5.5 Lid extends a bit higher. 4 7/8, the belly extends wider. Lid: Included - fits snugly. This piece is structurally sound and displays beautifully.
It has several handmade irregularities typical of studio pottery, all shown in the final photos. Two glaze variations on the body - one cloudy matte patch and one distinct irregularity. Glaze variation near the rim of the lid. Surface-level crack on the underside - does not go through to the interior or affect use.
Due to the reflective nature of the glaze and subtle texture shifts, some variations may be hard to capture in photos, and I may have missed a minor one. Please examine the images closely and feel free to reach out with questions - I'm happy to provide additional views if needed. These features are natural outcomes of the hand-glazing and firing process, and speak to the authenticity and character of the piece. The base and lid will be wrapped separately, cushioned with padding, and placed in a well-fitted inner box.
Each piece is thoroughly inspected, photographed, and packaged with care. If a return is approved, buyers must retain all original packaging and provide clear photos of both the item and the packaging upon request.
