ROOKWOOD SHAPE #1890 "SWAN" VASE WITH MOTTLED MATTE BLUE GLAZE DATED 1930. It has a great design with a stylized "swan" (others suggest a moth), clearly influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement. I've read that this shape was designed by Rookwood artist Sarah Sax. The glaze is a mottled medium blue color with a matte finish. The vase stands about 6 3/8" tall and tapers towards the top with an opening approximately 1 1/2" wide.

The underside of the base is marked with the reversed R and P Rookwood logo surrounded by flame marks, along with the "XXX" date code for 1930, and the shape number "1890". It's guaranteed to be a genuine Rookwood vase and NOT a modern knockoff. Rookwood Pottery was started by Maria Longworth Nichols in 1880. It has the distinction of being the first manufacturing company in the United States founded by a female. In 1883, after much success earning medals for the company's work, namely at the Exhibition of American Art Industry in Philadelphia and the Exposition Universelle in Paris, the business went from a fledgling pottery company to a thriving business over the subsequent decades as demand for American art pottery grew during the early 20th century.

The company continued operating successfully through the 1920s but never recovered after struggling through the Great Depression only to close the shop in 1941. A group of investors, led by automobile dealer Walter E. Schott and his wife Margaret, bought the company and began production once again in the early 1940s. Rookwood changed hands numerous times before moving to Starkville, Mississippi, in 1960. The doors of the legendary pottery closed for good in 1967.

Condition of this Rookwood vase is EXCELLENT with no chips or cracks. It's very clean and was obviously well cared for.
