Raku Pottery Mask Hand-Crafted Wall-mounted Sculpture 12" x 8" Multicolor. This handcrafted Raku pottery mask is a unique piece of art.

The mask is made of clay and measures approximately 12 by 8 inches. It features a brilliant multicolor facade created by a mixture of elements (copper, iron, cobalt, silver) making it a one-of-a-kind (OOAK) item. The mask's theme is people, and it is a perfect addition to any art collection. This item is perfect for those who appreciate handmade, original art pieces. The mask is an original piece, made by myself, Nancy Zarbock.

I have been firing clay for. Develop custom raku glazes which are lead-free and formulated to create dazzling effects on varied surfaces of non-functional pottery and sculpture. No two finished pieces will ever be the same because the metals (silver, copper, cobalt, iron) and colorants of the glazes are brought to the surface by flame and reduction to present themselves in a unique way.

The mask was created from a mold that I created. It is slab-built Standard Raku Clay S295, brushed, sponged, oxide wash, propane fired to cone 06, smoking for reduction. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for many centuries to create an unique finish to wares. The Raku technique dates to the 16th century, traditionally crafted by hand The Raku technique is essentially when glazed ceramics are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze.

Raku firing without glaze on them means that the oxygen is taken from the clay itself rather than a glaze, which results in some areas having a matte black coloring. Raku firing creates completely unique pieces as there is never a certainty as to how the final piece will turn out. Raku essentially creates a unique design every time, so there is less control on the outcome. Raku pottery, an ancient Japanese art form, intertwines spirituality, craftsmanship, and the serendipitous beauty of imperfections. Originating in the 16th century, Raku has transcended time, continuing to captivate artists and collectors alike with its unique aesthetic and philosophical depth.

Raku chargers' "Autumn" has been featured in the book "500 RAKU", published by Lark. Winning entry distinguishes itself with combination of glazes, and its application.
