Hamada Shoji Press Mold Flat Bottle Vase Mashiko Japanese Studio Art Pottery

  

Press-molded flat bottle vase (henko) covered in ochre slip, glazed in tenmoku and nuka (rice husk ash), and decorated with finger wipe grasses. Approximately 9 inches in height by 6 inches in width by 3 1/4 inches deep. Due to the molding process, these press-molded bottles have a tendency to develop flaws during firing. As the glaze filled and sealed the majority of the flaw, only a small urushi lacquer repair was necessary to stabilize the unglazed portion.
