During the first 12 years the van Briggle pottery of Colorado Springs, Colorado was operating, some of the most creative and amazing glazes were developed. Both Artus up until his passing in the summer of 1904 and his wife Anne created unbelievable color combinations to decorate the pottery.

Besides the usual blues and maroons, other hues such as greens, yellows, lavenders, etc. Also became popular on assorted pieces.

This example, produced in 1905, has the quintessential aspects of the arts and crafts/mission style popular at this time in history. The pot, catalogue number 352, was created in the middle to latter part of the year 1905, possibly designed by the head potter, Ambrose Schlegel. This is determined by the Roman numerals VX underneath the date. Also underneath the shape number appears the letter B. This indicates the size as this shape was most likely produced in five sizes labeled from A to E; A representing the largest, E the smallest.

This dark clay seems to enhance the glaze color, sometimes showing through when the glaze thins on the high points of the underlying pattern in the mold. The vase stands 4" tall, measures approximately 5 1/2" across the widest area of the body. In fantastic condition, I can find no chips, cracks, damage or repairs. I will mention a couple pinhead lighter colored spots which appear to be minute scuffs in the clay as pictured. Only mentioned for accuracy as they do not detract from the beauty or value.

Also as visible in the pictures of the bottom the heavy suspended glaze required post firing grinding. This aspect can be found on many heavy glazed pottery examples produced at this time.

A truly monumental example of early van Briggle pottery for any collection! Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future.
