Here is a beautiful Dedham Pottery vase hand thrown by Hugh Cornwall Robertson. It has a very good red mottled and speckled luster glaze on the heavy ovoid form. It measures 7 5/8 inches in tall and 4 5/8 inches in diameter at the widest. Marked with a hand incised Dedham Pottery and Hugh's conjoined HCR.
It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or firing flaws, just a few slips in the glaze and roughness to the foot. Hugh Robertson was fascinated by Asian ceramics and glazes, in particular the Chinese oxblood red.Often called experimental, this work is really Hugh's true art pottery and the famous crackle dinnerware was made to keep the firm afloat. A good piece of sang de boeuf Dedham.
