Dated Van Briggle Art Pottery Vase-1904-Arts & Crafts Style-A Schlegel-A+ Glaze

  
A super dated example from the Van Briggle pottery of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This particular vase has a simple arts and crafts form with an organic blended thick mustard yellow/tan glaze. Dated 1904, this piece could very well have been produced while Artus Van Briggle was still alive as he passed in July of that year. From research I have discovered that he never cared much for yellow glazes; he and his wife Anne had taken a trip to Tucson, Arizona earlier in the year at which time this item could possibly have been made at the factory. As seen in several pictures of the bottom, the glaze was so thick that it ran over and obscured part of the mark including the shape number. Again, from research I believe this piece would be possibly shape number 271 or 272 because in the literature no height is recorded. Both these shape were designed in 1904 possibly by Ambrose Schlegel who had become the primary potter for the company.

The vase stands just under 6 1/2 tall and measures roughly 7 1/4 across the widest area. The top diameter measures 3 1/2 across. Thorough examination reveals no chips, cracks, damage or repairs.

The inside is clean with no residue or staining from use. I will mention because of the thickness of the glaze that on the bottom are several glaze bubble pops, the largest visible in the last picture. These bubbles are common in very thick glaze as the liquid tended to boil in the kiln during firing. I do not believe it detracts from the look of the piece.
