Danish Art Deco Stoneware: Holbæk Keramik, Large Blue Arts & Crafts Style Vase. The north of Zealand in Denmark has a rich ceramics history and was home to many of the most well-known 20th century Danish stoneware workshops. Is a little-known part of that history. Documentation on this workshop is hard to come by, but sources indicate that it operated for roughly 100 years, from 1878 to 1979. This workshop seems to have primarily been engaged in the production of utilitarian ware, such as bowls, dishes and flower pots. Actually had its own clay pit and at one point specialized in particularly hardy jam pots as the clay could be fired at very high temperatures, resulting in earthenware which was almost as strong as stoneware. However, some very nice artistic stoneware in Art Deco and Arts & Crafts styles were produced by this workshop, commonly in monochromatic glazes on simple forms. Was taken over by H. Nielsen is reported to have been among the first to stamp and sign his works, and was known to experiment with glazes, including metallic luster glazes. The most beautiful being the metal-shining luster glazes. Nielsen was very secretive about his icing work, and also took the icing recipes to the grave. The most well-known potters working for Holbæk Lervarefabrik apart from H. Knud Kyhn and Olga Schulin were also affiliated for brief periods of time. This large vase is a very good example of quality artistic stoneware from the. The unusually large (for this workshop) form of this vase, with high shoulders, carries a very nice matte dark blue glaze reminiscent of Arts & Crafts ceramics of the late 19th and early 20th century. I have not been able to definitely date this piece or attribute it to a specific artist, but it likely dates from the first half of the 20th century (1920s-1940s) and could be from the hand of either H. This vase is well marked with the incised. Pieces from this workshop in this condition are hard to find as they were not produced in large quantity.

The dimensions of this vase are 7.5 inches high, 5.5 inches wide at its widest point, and about 3 inches across the mouth. This first quality piece is in very good condition, with no significant observed flaws other than some small pinholes, which are common in production from this workshop, and some minor scuffs.
