This unusual Cowan vase is about 9 t. Guy Cowan's monogram in addition to his recognizable signature R. The clay is a buff color and heavier than the white clay body used in Rocky River.
All of this information indicates that the piece was made before 1919, while the company was still operating (starting in 1912) in the town of Lakewood, not yet in Rocky River. It could conceivably be as early as 1912. Condition: crazing, which is not distracting. Lovely variations of color in this glaze application, with layers overlapping each other.
Some minor glaze nicks on both the foot and the body, indicating that the glaze is perhaps on the brittle side. I'm Mark Bassett, author and collector.
I frequently recommend the groups Cowan Pottery Collectors and Pottery Collector on Facebook. Great place for beginners and advanced collectors to mingle and learn more about Cowan and other art pottery. As an American Art Pottery Association (AAPA) member, I abide by their Code of Ethics. Please let me know within 3 days, if you want to return the piece.
