Antique Arequipa Art Pottery Vase Description and Item Information Up for sale is this large, old Arequipa art pottery vase. Please excuse any glare in the photos.
This pot has a softly speckled blue glaze which is darker above and lighter below. The piece measures approximately 6 inches tall, with a maximum diameter of about 11 1/2 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 5 pounds 9.5 ounces. A brown clay body is visible beneath. This would be a fine addition to a collection of early California art pottery.
Identification This Arequipa pottery vase has incised markings beneath, as shown. Arequipa was founded in Fairfax, California (in Marin County) several years after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Arequipa was a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, and the pottery program was created as a form of rehabilitative therapy. Pottery was produced by patients at Arequipa from 1911 to 1918, under the leadership of directors Frederick Hurten Rhead (1911 to 1913), Albert Solon, and Fred Wilde.
Condition The vase looks good overall, as shown, with no clay chips or cracks. To the exterior, there are scattered, small, dark scuff marks. There are some minor scratches. I found a small patch of slight abrasions to the glaze at the widest point of the exterior (total area of several very small abrasions is about 1/4 inch wide by 7/8 inch wide); this area is visible in Photo 2, right of center, at the widest part of the vase.
There is fine crazing, some of which has darkened slightly. The interior has minor soiling/staining from use. As made, there are variations in glazing including thicker and thinner areas, lighter and darker areas, scattered tiny small bubble pops, and tiny raised spots.
Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. And international government regulations prohibit such behavior.
