1905 Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts Belgian Snake Handles Ceramiques de Flandres

  
This is an interesting piece of pottery with a provenance related to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements in both Europe and America in the early 20th Century, and the Brooklyn Arts Education community from that period. This vase was imported from the Flanders region of Europe (the northern part of Belgium) and exhibited at the Eastern Art Teachers' Association Convention in Trenton, New Jersey in May 1905. There is a label on the bottom of the vase which identifies when and where it was exhibited, as well as the name of the importer Edwin A. Denham at 31 Barclay Street in New York City. You can imagine that this and other similar pieces were being looked at by Art Educators in the U. Right when the Arts and Crafts movement was getting started in America and as the Art Nouveau style was intersecting with the Arts and Crafts movement in Northern Europe. The piece stands 12 inches tall and is 8 inches wide. It weighs just over 5 pounds and is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or crazing.

The pottery does have a roughness in its execution, with some pits and debris embedded in the clay and glaze. It has an exotic look to it and would fit in nicely with Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts or Mission style interiors. It even has an almost Moorish look to it. I don't have a lot of information on the Eastern Art Teachers' Association, but there is a connection with the arts community in Brooklyn at the turn of the century.

According to a New York Times article, the organization was formed in Brooklyn in May 1899 and had its first meeting at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Science at 174 Montague Street (a branch office of the Institute at the time the current Brooklyn Museum was being built).
