Van Briggle Pottery, Arts & Crafts Design, Monumental Floor Vase, Mulberry, Nice
This shape is a floor vase and it is done in a popular two toned glaze. This vase is quite large as it stands 12" tall and is 9 7/8" in diameter at the shoulder.
The bottom has a diameter of 5 1/8. This vase displays a large tapered swollen form. It display a beautiful pattern of stylized lotus blossom with a ribbon style leaf that wraps around each flower and flows to the next.This pattern repeats itself 6 times and is only embossed on the top shoulder of the vase. The lower body of the vessel is smooth. This pattern is set against one of Van Briggle's most popular glazes known as "Mulberry".
The background of the vase is a deep matte mulberry or "burgundy" glaze. It is accented with a speckled country blue over spray on top portion with this stylized Lotus Blossom is embossed. This is an early version of this glaze and it is very well executed. The vase is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips or dings.
The piece has a very shallow glaze nick along the bottom edge. This is pictured and considered insignificant. The vase is signed on the bottom with Van Briggle's incised double A logo for Artus and Anna Van Briggle along with the large block lettering VAN BRIGGLE COLO. This is a nice early piece of Van Briggle in a very desired glaze. It is known as shape number 766 in the Van Briggle catalog.This is not a commonly found form.
