Has a rounded foot and a ruffled & tortured rim. The base of the vase reveals Ohr's signature red clay. The exterior is covered in a blackish gunmetal glaze while the interior is covered in a transparent olive glaze with some of the red clay peaking through to create an amber appearance. This vase is stamped on the underside G. The vase is 5" tall and 5" in diameter which is large for Ohr's pottery. Ohr never duplicated a form so this is the only piece of its kind in existence. Absolutely one of a kind. This vase is unmistakably Ohr. To start with, the highly reflective gunmetal glaze was his invention and was absolutely unique in the history of ceramics. Hugh Robertson was experimenting with gunmetal glazes around the same time but it would be difficult to say that any of his experiments were as successful as Ohr's. The gunmetal glaze is one of Ohr's signatures throughout his career... He experimented endlessly with it creating various degrees of thickness and lustre. The rim is absolutely Ohr's as well - it's been ruffled and lightly torn to enliven the form - this was another invention of his that had the effect of breaking the monotony of the symmetrical ceramic form. This vase is in excellent condition without any cracks or chips. There's some light wear around the waste of the vase - probably from being stored/pressed up against other vases (all Ohr pots were stored in an attic above a garage for 60 years). There's a 1/2 area under the rim where the thin transparent glaze layer has seperated a bit. Because of the highly reflective nature of this piece the wear is very difficult to see and it disappears in the reflections as seen in the first photo. All of the photographs have been taken under professional lighting.

I lit the piece with 1, 2 and 3 lights in different pictures to accentuate the different aspects of this highly reflective and very hard to photograph piece! The first image comes closest to how the vase appears in normal artificial indoor lighting. This piece comes from a good home - the last image shows some of my George Ohr collection. You need any more pictures of the piece please let me know. This piece is 100% guaranteed original Ohr...

Not fake or reglazed like so many other pieces. Ohr's work can be found in museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and of course the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum in Biloxi Mississippi.
